![]() Buying A Portable Digital RecorderTuesday, 24 January 2012 Digital Recorder Buying Advice
There are many portable digital recorders to choose from, from the cheap to the very expensive. We go through some of our favourites: Zoom H4n - The replacement to the very popular Zoom H4, the H4n is a popular choice for musicians to record ideas, and to record seminars and for location recording. It certainly is portable, has a robust case, and the handling noise is very low. The RC04 remote control is also available to remove the chance of handling noise completely. You simply can't go wrong with the H4n. Roland R-05 - the new recorder on the block. Oddly Roland discontinued their R-09HR, but the R-05 is a suitable replacement. The R-05 has a very good battery life of up to 16 hours and like most recorders can record in .WAV and MP3 format. The R-05 includes a built-in reverb effect which can prove handy. Zoom H2N - Zoom's newest digital recorder, the H2n has very high quality microphones. It has five mic capsules and has the feature of recording surround sound. You can of course select your mic pattern. The H2n has a built-in speaker for playback and up to 20 hours battery life. The compressor is a nice touch, especially for singer / songwriters recording dynamic pieces. Tascam DR-05 - Tascam have been making portable digital recorders for many years so they know a thing or two about making quality recorders. The DR-05 is at the cheaper end of the spectrum yet has the features of a digital recorder of twice the price. It has a built in speaker and headphone output, is easy to use, and records are a good quality. Zoom H1 - A digital recorder we use a lot, it's surprisingly good for the price. The recorded quality is superb and the microphones are sensitive. When used in one position it's the best there is, however if you will be holding it the handling noise can be quite high. Leave it on a table and it's fine. We love this one! There are many more so have a look at Digital Recorders at Camden Sounds.
