The Zoom H2 Handy brings the versatility of the H4 Handy to a simple-to-use ultra-portable 2-track version which will find uses in recording seminars, workshops, conferences, podcasting, ENG Electric News Gathering, live performances, songwriting and rehearsals. On-board AGC automatic gain control, limiting and compression make H2 recordings consistently professional. With dual X/Y configured stereo mics facing front and rear and on-board signal processing, the Zoom H2 Handy can record with 5 possible polar patterns from cardioid to super cardioid to 360-degree. The Zoom H2 internal 4-mic capsules allows for several different polar patterns which, combined with its signal-processing capabilities, give the H2 the ability to record 4-channel data that can be authored into 5.1 surround.

The Zoom H2 will record via the integral one point four-capsule stereo microphone, and achieves the Mid/Side (MS) Stereo technique by using a 3 microphone capsule configuration and digital signal processing. General MS Mid/Side stereo uses one directional cardioid microphone for the M middle microphone and bi-directional cardioid microphone for the S side mic, placed at 90 degree angles. The Zoom H2 Mid microphone picks up the monophonic sound while the Side microphone will pick up the left/right difference sound. Subtracting and adding the two microphone signals yields separate Left and Right channels, and also permits the adjustment of the pickup angle such as 90 or 120 degrees.

The Zoom H2 features is a switchable pickup angle between the left and right channels choosing 90-degrees for a single voice or a single instrument, while a pickup angle of 120-degrees would be more suited to several voices or instruments arranged across a wider stage. The cardioid pattern is switchable into front, rear and omni directions, and as such 360 degree sound can be recorded as 2 channel or 4-channel data simultaneously.

The Zoom H2 Handy has a built-in USB interface which can be used as an audio interface function for recording audio directly, turning the H2 Handy into a USB microphone. Using almost any recording software (Windows XP and Vista, Mac OS X 10.2 and later operating systems supported), you can create a podcast, and the H2 direct monitoring feature means that you can monitor with no latency during recording. Or use the USB interface to move audio files to your PC or Mac for storage and editing. The Zoom H2 Handy records on SD media cards up to 8GB with Transcend TS8GSDHC or TS8GSDHC6 cards (ships with 512MB card) with WAV 96kHz DVD quality, 48kHz DAT quality, and 44.1kHz CD quality sample rates and MP3 up to 320kbps VBR Variable Bit Rate data format. The H2 provides 2-hours recording at 96kHz/24-bit, 6-hours at 44.1kHz/16-bit or up to 138-hours at MP3 64kbps with a 4GB SD card. The EXT MIC IN feature allows the connection of external powered microphones, and the Zoom H2 support Broadcast Wave Format BWF found in broadcast applications. Files recorded on the Zoom H2 can be time-stamped with date and time and cue point marked during recording. Play back Zoom H2 recordings with either headphones or powered speakers with the 1/8" stereo output.

The Zoom H2 Handy Recorder will be used for podcasting, concerts, education, band rehearsals, conference recording, acoustic instruments, orchestra, piano recordings and interviews. Every application needed brilliant stereo recording.

It is also possible to use PC authoring software to arrange 4 channel data from the Zoom H2 Handy into the Dolby 5.1 surround sound format
